When I think of the DMV I think of the Mecca, Ben’s Chilli Bowl, and The Green-Eyed Bandit Donnie Simpson. When I landed at National Airport in DC with my stiff Howard University t-shirt I was anxious. I glanced at my uncle to tell him not to take me to freshman orientation and then I heard the melody of the Commodores’ Jesus is Love playing on the radio followed by Donnie Simpson’s velvet smooth voice.
From BET’s Video Soul to WPGC 95.5 to Majic 102.3 for the last 40 years, the soul of DC has been Donnie Simpson. In many ways, Simpson is as ingrained into the fabric of Washington as the old velvet paintings of Dr. King and the Last Supper’s our grandmothers had hanging in the living room. For a few hours last Sunday Simpson’s fan, friends, and family came together to celebrate one of Washington D.C.’s icons.
Ronnie and Shamari DeVoe are using their platforms as entertainers to make a positive impact in the community. Music lovers should recognize the Devoes from their successful music groups. Ronnie is one of the original members of the R&B super groups New Edition. When NE is on hiatus, he performs with BBD and RBRM, both groups are off shots from the New Edition family tree. As the lead singer of Blaque, Shamari’s angelic vocals are front and center on the group’s biggest hits. She performed with the multi-platinum chart topping group at Silk’s 25th anniversary celebration. The success the DeVoes have earned in the music industry is just part of their story. While raising the cutest set of twin boys you’ve ever seen, the couple still finds time for philanthropy and helping others realize the dream of home ownership.
Vocal Music Honoree Michael Bivins, has spent most of his life entertaining fans around the world. The living legend has won many awards and showered with countless accolades throughout his career with New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD). In 2017 New Edition was honored with a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and served as co-producer on the New Edition biopic.
I’m an NE 4 Lifer, but I didn’t show up to the party until 1985 or 86. Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph, and Johnny of New Edition are The Temptations, The Jacksons, and The Beatles of my generation. Period, full stop don’t argue with me about this.
They provided the soundtrack of our lives. We sang each hit and tried, some unsuccessfully, to recreate their intricate choreography. We’ve gone from wanting to be Candy Girls to playing Can You Stand the Rain at our weddings, to playing I’m Still In Love With You at our anniversary parties/vowel renewals to yes, playing Is This The End at divorce parties. Don’t even get me started on that madness, but yes divorce parties are a real thing.
Bobby has been feeding our souls since dancing on the scene in 1983 as one of the original members of New Edition. He has always…
Music icon Michael Bivins and his wife, real-estate mogul Teasha are the proud doting parents of four beautiful girls – Savannah, Shilah, Starlah, and Sanaah. Savannah is the leader of the Lil Supremes as they are affectionately called by their parents.
Savi is the power couple’s’ blueprint. The preteen is already following in her parent’s footsteps and making her own niche. From the honor roll to performing on stages, to landing a paying gig as a makeup artist, she’s putting us all on notice. The future is female, and her name is Bivins.
Who could’ve predicted the words Michelle Obama spoke in 2008 at the Democratic National Convention would again hold us captive? This time the inspiring speech was again met with loud applause and approval despite starring in the mini series that the Republican National Convention has become. It looked like we may have a return to an American version of Camelot. Then the bubble burst. This election season has been wild, and unpredictable. But this? Not a single crystal ball was tuned into Melania Trump standing at center stage of the Republican National Convention delivering the words that initially made us fall in love fall with Michelle Obama.
A lot can and has been said about the unfortunate turn of events that lead to Melania Trump borrowing part of her primetime speech from First Lady Michelle Obama.
I was never a Barbie kind of girl growing up. The iconic doll with her long golden hair and thin limbs just didn’t speak to me. Theoretically, I was opposed to everything I thought Barbie stood for. The truth is I was never a doll type of girl but I might have been if I the new evolution of Barbie had been available when I was a kid.
The power of seeing a version of yourself that you can identify with can’t be undervalued. Grown women have been moved to tears since Mattel revealed the new Barbies. Maize n Blue Hear the screams from everywhere Feel the energy in the air I’m addicted to Big Blue It’s…
We thought a loving family like ours how could it go wrong? This will be a great way to have fun even though we are miles apart and enjoy football that we have been bonding over our entire lives. I bleed Chicago Bears on Sundays and Maize and Blue on Saturdays. In college I spent Sundays watching the Washington Redskins with My Uncle Charles. Usually I spent my Sundays laughing because the Redskins were losing and Mr. cool would act like it was all in the plan. He did a Jerry Jones and took faith in moral victories with his Redskins 2 decades ago. Having family in Oklahoma and family in D.C. made me despise everything related to the Dallas Cowgirls. Unfortunately, I have a knack for attracting Cowgirl nation to me. Yeah I married one and I am definitely going to hear about talking about his beloved Cowgirls I mean Cowboy later, Other than him being a Dallas Cowboy fan he’s a great husband.
